Are You a Christian in Name Only?

Most problems with faith can be traced back to core belief as the root cause.

Do you believe from your heart or only from your mind and emotions? What do you really believe and have you ever experienced an encounter and the presence of Jesus? God is relational and without that the bible becomes a history book and scholarly pursuit.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” -Romans 10:9-10

“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules” -Matthew 15:8-9

The result of wrong believing is a struggle with relationship that hinders faith and trust. You feel like God is distant. This can lead to drifting into religion and being deceived with false doctrine. Your definition of Christianity becomes confusing and distorted.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” -Hebrews 11:6

Love in this context has to do with divided loyalties. Is your struggle with a love of the world that persists and is difficult to overcome? So you are trying to serve two masters and that leads to conflict and compromised faith. So then you are a Christian in name only trying to have it all and not surrendered.

You have to choose and making no choice really translates to no relationship.

Obedience then is the fruit of sound faith and love of God that starts with right believing from your heart.

Disobedience is what got mankind into this mess and all that came after inheriting the sin nature. Eve believed the serpent after God previously told her she would die if she ate the fruit from the tree of life. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

So then obedience, discipline, and persistence are the fruit of real faith and love of Jesus, and that starts with right believing from your heart. This enables you to live a Christian life pleasing to God and finish with a good testimony that is yours forever.
